Pre-Budget Forum
Co-organized by The Professional Commons & Legco Office of Hon. Anson Chan
In the financial year of 2006/07, the Hong Kong SAR Government recorded a historically high budget surplus of HK$124billions. Our forecast is that the budget surplus for 2007/08 will be around the same level as the last financial year. However, Hong Kong citizens are at the same time facing the increasing burden of inflation. The Composite Price Index shows that the inflation rate is rising from 2% in January 2007 to the 3.8% in December 2007.
In view of the high rate of inflation and the anticipated high level of budget surplus, should government provide support for the under-privilege community & the long term social problems in Hong Kong? We are organizing an open forum for further discussion.
